Former Chicago Bears linebacker and Professional Soccer Corridor of Famer Dick Butkus has died on the age of 80, the group introduced Thursday.

Butkus died “peacefully in his sleep in a single day at residence in Malibu,” California, an announcement from his household, posted by the Bears on social media, reads.

A ferocious hitter, Butkus was an imposing drive because the Bears’ center linebacker for 9 seasons within the Nineteen Sixties and Nineteen Seventies, and made eight Professional Bowls.

He retired after enjoying a part of the 1973 season, a couple of years after struggling a knee harm, and was elected to the Professional Soccer Corridor of Fame in 1979, his first 12 months eligible.
